Digital’s role in our lives has reached new heights, with more people spending more time doing things online, than ever before:


  • The number of people around the world using the Internet has grown to 4.54 billion, which is an increase of 7% compared to January 2019.
  • There are 3.80 billion social media users in January 2020, with this number increasing by more than 9% since this time last year.
  • Globally, more than 5.19 billion people now use mobile phones.


Thenextweb research show that the average Internet user will probably spend more than 100 days online this year. This information is accompanied by fact that average Internet usage today is 6 hours and 43 minutes.


Mobile phone users is half of the internet use


The latest data shows that 92% of the world’s Internet users now connect via mobile devices, while tree thirds of Internet users aged 16 to 64 years use Internet on computers or laptops.


Also, the world’s smartphone users downloaded more than 200 billion mobile apps in 2019, spending a total of US$120 billion on apps and app-related purchases.


Facebook still dominates in the race for the most used mobile app. Facebook audience now stands at 1.95 billion, or roughly 80% of total monthly active users.


TikTok has also seen a sharp increase in active users over the past year. Today, TikTok has 800 million monthly active users, which secures him 6th place in the global mobile app rankings.


Top of the growth charts is Reddit, whose reported monthly active user numbers have surged by 30% since this time last year and today has 100 million monthly active users.


Voice continues to grow


Compared to last year, the use of this feature increased by 9%. It’s important to point out that the rise of voice isn’t only about the use of speakers. Researches shows that one in three global Internet users now use voice interfaces on their mobile phones each month for searching web or playing video games.


Concern about security and privacy


Privacy still remains important question for Internet users. Statistics show that more than half Internet users are skeptical when it comes to the truth of the content they find on the Internet. Accordingly, the number of people worldwide aged 16 to 64, who use ad blocking tools every month, is increasing. Almost half of all Internet users aged 16 to 64 have used ad blocking in the last month.


Gaming is a serious business


Statistic shows that 4 out of 5 Internet users around the world play video games every month, which matches to a total global gaming community of more than 3.5 billion people. The majority of gamers play games on their smartphones (69% of all Internet users), and 25% of them also reported playing games on dedicated gaming consoles.


Video is still the one to watch


GlobalWebIndex reports that 90% of Internet users aged 16 to 64 now watch online videos each month. YouTube, of course, still commands the greatest share. Moreover, data show that two-thirds of Internet users watch TV content via some form of subscription service (e.g. Netflix).


Non-stopping shopping


The latest data showed that worldwide ecommerce spend grew significantly during 2019. The biggest increase was in categories: travel, furniture & appliances, fashion & beauty, and electronics. At a global level, the average ecommerce shopper now spends almost US$500 on online purchases each year. Also, research show that the economic development is not the primary determinant of ecommerce use and its distribution across the world, there are other factors that are more important, such as sites that are language-friendly and cultural preferences of shoppers.
