Sex and the City is undeniably one of the most influential TV shows ever made, and its cultural status remains intact (setting aside the questionable spin-off And Just Like That, where Samantha appeared for all of two and a half minutes, but that’s a topic for another piece). Beyond breaking taboos around sexuality and women’s emancipation, the series also gave audiences a rare portrayal of a public relations professional through the unforgettable Samantha Jones.
Of course, the reality of PR is far less glamorous than portrayed on screen. Still, Samantha taught us a few timeless lessons that remain highly relevant for anyone working in communications.
Be confident in yourself and your value
Samantha’s most defining trait is her confidence. She is unapologetically herself and fearless in going after what she wants, both professionally and personally. She takes risks, exudes reliability, and gives the impression that she’s always in control.
Confidence is a cornerstone of PR. Our role is to build trust with clients, assure them they can rely on us, and project certainty in our work. Simply put: confidence inspires confidence.
Networking is everything
One of Samantha’s greatest strengths is her social skill set. PR is, at its core, a relationship-driven profession. Having a strong, reliable network of journalists, influencers, editors, and stakeholders is invaluable.
A good network makes it easier to reach goals, amplify messages, and respond quickly in crisis situations. Networking also unlocks opportunities for campaigns, clients, and collaborations that formal channels alone could never provide.
Persistence pays off
Samantha doesn’t take “no” for an answer, at least not when it comes to her clients or her own interests. While her methods can be questionable at times, her persistence is a quality every PR professional should adopt.
In this industry, determination is noticed and appreciated by both clients and employers. Persistence drives results, those who keep pushing forward are the ones who make an impact.
Build your personal brand
To elevate the reputation of clients, PR professionals must first establish their own. Visibility, authenticity, and consistency are essential in building trust and credibility.
With competition fierce in PR, standing out is key. A strong personal brand not only demonstrates expertise but also opens doors to new opportunities and partnerships.
Final thoughts
Samantha Jones may not have taught us the technical side of PR, but she showed us that confidence, courage, and determination are indispensable in this line of work. In PR, as in life, those who aren’t afraid to stand out and put in the effort often achieve the greatest success.
